Scheduling your first senior portrait photo session can be nerve-wracking. The most common fears are circled around what to wear and what to expect.
So here are some important helpful tips to help you have a fun and successful photo session.
12 Tips For An Amazing Senior Photo Session
- First, arrive for your photo session on time! All photo sessions are taken the last two hours before sunset to capture beautiful lighting. Once that light is gone, we can’t get it back. If you are late, you will end up having fewer photos taken.
- Arrive completely ready. Girls, have your hair and makeup finished and arrive wearing one of your outfits you plan to wear for the photos. You will have a chance to touch up along the way, but there isn’t time for you to do your hair or makeup once you arrive.
- The most important aspect of successful senior photos is for you to be yourself. If you are normally a casual, sporty person, then shorts or jeans are totally okay to wear. If you are chic and sassy, then bring your favorite dress and funky shoes. And of course, you can always mix it up and do a combination of casual and chic.
- Solid colored tops are ideal. I want you to stand out, not your floral shirt.
- Bring a combination of the following:
* One black top
* One light blue top
* One bright colored top (pink or red)
* 2-3 neutral or earth tones (light grey, brown, beige, green or orange)
*** If you don’t own ALL of these, just bring the 1-3 that you do have

- Bring more options of clothing than you might need. When you are going through options, if you aren’t sure about a particular top, go ahead and bring it.
- Don’t buy anything! I guarantee you have at least 2-3 wardrobe options that are perfect for your photos.
- Bring props if you want to. If you are a soccer player or band member, bring your soccer ball or musical instrument.
- BRING COMFORTABLE WALKING SHOES! Your photos can be taken in sassy heels, but I walk my clients to several cool locations within a few blocks walking distance. And you definitely want comfortable shoes for the walk.
- Bring a water bottle.
- Have fun!
Common Fears and Questions
What if I wake up the morning of my session and have a huge pimple on my forehead?
Answer: No worries! This is the beauty of editing. With one click I can make any blemish disappear!
I sweat a lot! Will I have sweat running down my face in my photos?
Answer: Not at all! All of my photo sessions are taken the last two hours before sunset. So even on a hot day, those last two hours are cool. Additionally, you won’t be photographed in direct sun. It’s always advised to bring a water bottle. And you can touch up along the way if you feel a little sticky. 🙂
What happens if it’s raining?
Answer: Rain is the only potential obstacle with photo sessions. If the forecast is showing 70% or greater chance of rain, we will definitely reschedule. If the forecast is showing 30-40% chance of rain, most likely we will be safe. We will communicate often if it looks like the weather might be an issue.
